As Christmas and Christmas Eve approach, last-minute errands often seem to crop up—whether it's picking up a final gift or grabbing one last ingredient for a holiday meal.
Many businesses close their doors on these two holidays to allow employees to spend time with family and loved ones. This year, Christmas Eve falls on Tuesday, December 24, and Christmas Day on Wednesday, December 25.
Before heading out, it's a good idea to check the hours of locally owned businesses. Here’s a rundown of what's open and closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2024:
Grocery Stores
- Albertsons Companies (including Safeway, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, ACME, Randalls, Shaw’s, Vons, and Tom Thumb) will be open on Christmas Eve with reduced hours. Many of these stores, including Jewel-Osco, Randalls, Shaw’s, and Tom Thumb, will be closed on Christmas Day. Some Safeway, Albertsons, ACME, and Vons locations may remain open with adjusted hours, so be sure to check with your local store.
- Kroger will operate with regular hours on Christmas Eve, but will be closed on Christmas Day. Kroger owns several chains, including Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, QFC, City Market, Owen’s, and more.
- Whole Foods, Aldi, and Trader Joe’s will be open on Christmas Eve with modified hours, but all will be closed on Christmas Day.
- Costco will be closed on Christmas Day. Sam’s Club will close at 6 PM on Christmas Eve and will also be closed on Christmas Day.
Retail Stores
- Walmart stores will close at 6 PM on Christmas Eve and remain closed on Christmas Day.
- Target will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM on Christmas Eve, but closed on Christmas Day.
- Home Depot locations may close at 5 PM on Christmas Eve (check local store hours), and will remain closed on Christmas Day.
- Lowe’s will operate normally on Christmas Eve and close on Christmas Day.
- Macy’s will be open from 8 AM to 7 PM on Christmas Eve, closing on Christmas Day.
- Kohl’s will be open from 7 AM to 7 PM on Christmas Eve, but closed on Christmas Day.
- Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack will have limited hours on Christmas Eve and close on Christmas Day.
Financial Centers
- Most banks will follow Federal Reserve holidays, so teller services will be closed on Christmas Day. Mobile banking and ATMs will remain available.
- Bank of America will be closed on Christmas Day.
- Wells Fargo will close at noon on Christmas Eve and will be closed all day on Christmas Day.
- TD Bank will also be closed on Christmas Day.
- The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ will not be trading on Christmas Day.
Pharmacies
- CVS will be open on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but with reduced hours. Be sure to confirm with your local CVS.
- Rite Aid will operate during regular hours on Christmas Eve but will close on Christmas Day.
- Walgreens will remain open on Christmas Eve, including all 24-hour locations. On Christmas Day, most pharmacies will be closed, but 24-hour locations and select others will remain open.
Postal Services
- The United States Postal Service will not process or deliver mail on Christmas Day (December 25).
- On Christmas Eve, FedEx Express and FedEx Office will operate with modified hours, while services like FedEx Ground and Custom Critical will be open as usual. On Christmas Day, only FedEx Custom Critical will operate.
- UPS will operate as usual on Christmas Eve. Limited UPS Store locations will be open on Christmas Day, and only UPS Express Critical will be available.
